Spotlight on Vardy again

first_imgLONDON (AP):Record already in hand, Leicester striker Jamie Vardy is ready to make the most of every chance he gets in his pursuit of more goals.Vardy can extend his scoring streak to 12 straight English Premier League games tomorrow when Leicester play at Swansea.”You have to realise that there are not a lot of chances coming your way,” Vardy said. “Once you get them, you need to be taking them. Otherwise, you’re going to get punished yourselves.”With his goal in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United last weekend, Vardy eclipsed the Premier League record previously held by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who scored in 10 straight games in 2003.Another goal by Vardy this weekend would equal the all-time record for goals in consecutive matches in the English topflight, set by Jimmy Dunne in 1931-32 for Sheffield United. Stan Mortensen scored in 15 consecutive games for Blackpool in 1950-51 but missed matches because of injury.Leicester are in surprising second place in the Premier League after 14 games, trailing Manchester City on goal difference and leading United by one point. Leicester escaped relegation only last season by winning nine of their last 11 games.Much of this season’s success can be credited to Vardy, who signed for Leicester in 2012 from non-league soccer.”He’s very, very smart,” Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri said, “very clever, and very cool”.City, who beat Hull 4-1 in the League Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, face Stoke tomorrow with playmaker David Silva back. Silva played for 80 minutes against Hull.”The most important thing was to qualify,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini said, “but it was important for him to have 80 minutes after a long injury.”Also, United will host West Ham, and Arsenal will welcome Sunderland. Also, it’s Chelsea vs Bournemouth; West Bromwich Albion vs Tottenham; Watford vs Norwich; and Southampton vs Aston Villa. On Sunday, Liverpool will visit Newcastle, while Everton will host Crystal Palace on Monday.INJURY-HIT ARSENALWith Santi Cazorla, Laurent Koscielny, and Alexis Sanchez all getting injured in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Norwich last week, the team is hurting.Sanchez has scored six in the Premier League and nine overall, and it’s unclear how long he will be out.”He says it is a kick on his hamstring,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “I fear the reality is worse than that.”REJUVENATED SUNDERLANDThose Arsenal injuries, combined with a rejuvenated Sunderland squad under recently hired manager Sam Allardyce, should be a boost for the Black Cats.”We will go into the big games as the underdogs and tell the lads to enjoy themselves because nobody expects you to get a result,” Allardyce said. “Hopefully, we can shock one or two because the lads have enough confidence in their ability to play any team at any time.”SAKHO’S FITNESSWest Ham, still missing the injured Dimitri Payet and Enner Valencia, also will be without Diafra Sakho against United at Old Trafford after the Senegal striker was ruled out with a thigh injury for up to two months by coach Slaven Bilic yesterday.Sakho was hurt in a 1-1 draw with West Brom last week.”It will be four to eight weeks, maybe more,” Bilic said. “He has a bit of history with his thigh. Three injuries to our key players, especially in the offensive side of our game, it’s a blow.”last_img read more

2016 Ohio Grape and Wine Conference

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The 2016 Ohio Grape and Wine Conference will be held Feb. 15-16 in Dublin, Ohio, featuring a number of experts from around the country who will cover key topics for the industry – including fruit quality, winemaking and product branding practices, and spring frost protection. The conference is being jointly organized by the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University, the Ohio Grape Industries Committee, and the Ohio Wine Producers Association. It will be held at the Embassy Suites Columbus-Dublin, 5100 Upper Metro Place, Dublin. Full conference registration costs $225. There are additional options for partial registration. For complete registration information, visit go.osu.edu/BKps.“This year’s conference consists of both general and concurrent sessions covering a wide range of interesting topics for grape growers and winemakers,” said Imed Dami, associate professor in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science and Ohio State University Extension viticulturist. Both the department and OSU Extension are part of the college.Conference highlights include four Monday general sessions:* James Osborne, enology Extension specialist at Oregon State University, will talk about fruit quality as it relates to processing considerations in the cellar. He will also provide an overview of Oregon’s grape and wine industry.* Bill Oliver, owner of Oliver Winery in Indiana, will focus on branding and the steps taken by his winery to achieve the success it enjoys today. Oliver will also provide an overview of wines, winemaking and vineyard practices at his winery.* Glenn McGourty, winegrowing and plant science advisor, University of California Cooperative Extension, will present some of his research on chemical trials in grapes for spring frost protection.* John Tull, research vineyard manager at the University of Minnesota Horticultural Research Center, will talk about his experiences with cold-hardy varieties and their characteristics as alternative grapes for Ohio growers.“Many of our sessions will focus on disseminating important information regarding new or alternative varieties of interest for commercial grape and wine production,” Dami said. “This stems from the possibility of replanting due to the harsh winter conditions we have experienced over the past two years in Ohio.”Ohio State experts will also give presentations on a variety of topics, including vineyard disease and weed control, grape insect management, managing grapevines after winter damage, herbicide drift protection, winemaking regulatory updates, and yeast strain selection. The full schedule is available at go.osu.edu/BKps. US Open: Bopanna-Qureshi in quarters

first_imgIndia’s Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi advanced to the men’s doubles quarterfinals of the US Open with an upset win over second seeded Canadian-Serbian pair of Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic here.Indo-Zimbabwean pair of Leander Paes and Cara Black also advanced to the last-eight stage of the tournament in the mixed doubles event. The 16th seeded Indo-Pak pair of Bopanna and Qureshi streamrolled their opponents 6-3 6-4 in a one-sided pre-quarterfinal clash at Flushing Meadows here. Both Bopanna and Qureshi were on song with their trademark aggressive serves and precision forehands as the duo demolised the Grand Slam contenders in straight sets. They will next face the daunting South African-Belgian pair of Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman, who reached the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon this year. This will be the second consecutive appearance at a Grand Slam quarter-final for the Indo-Pak pair who made it to the final eight at the Wimbledon.”They are formidable opponents, but they have had a relatively easier draw, the draws have been tougher on us so we are ready, prepared and focused on the task at hand,” said a determined Bopanna.Bopanna and Qureshi had a phenomenal 2010 season, with stellar performances at Wimbledon, besides winning an ATP Tour Title, reaching the finals of three others and picking up a Challenger Series Title along the way.In the second round of the mixed doubles event, second seeded Paes and Black lived up to their billings, defeating unseeded Estonia-Swedish pair of Kaia Kanepi and Robert Lindstedt 6-1 6-4.advertisementThey will next meet Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Mark Knowles of Bahrain in the third round of the last Grand Slam event of the year.last_img read more

Year of despairs & hopes

first_imgIt was a year of despairs, catastrophe & hopes that ended with the government setting up a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the media reports relating to macabre assassination of Benazir Bhutto.[The Express Tribune reported yesterday (December 31) that the  plot behind the 2007 assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto was hatched at the home of a Pakistani army brigadier. But Interior Minister Rehman Malik dismissed it as “totally concocted”.  Report said a fresh probe had uncovered the role of nine men, including the brigadier in whose residence the plot was hatched.]Widely-read Dawn in a report said the government set up on Friday a joint investigation team (JIT) comprising three officials of police, Inter-Services Intelligence and the Federal Investigation Agency to investigate media reports about the plot.JIT to submit report in a week According to sources, the team will be headed by Islamabad’s Deputy Inspector-General (Operations) of Police Bani Amin. The JIT has been asked present its report in a week.According to its terms of reference, the team will investigate the veracity of the claim made in the report, examine authenticity of sources and unravel the characters involved. Some reports quoted Interior Minister Rehman Malik as indicating that if needed a judicial commission could also be appointed to investigate the matter, but a handout issued later said he had refused to comment on the issue because it was sub judice and that he had been misquoted. He said the report on the assassination was yet to be made public.advertisementThe report will be presented soon to the central executive council of the Pakistan People’s Party. “The future course of action will be considered only after its presentation to the CEC,” the minister said.2010: Year of gloom & hopesMeanwhile media review of 2010 described the it eventful like its predecessors, mostly marked by catastrophes, bloodshed and poor governance, but the year has also stimulated hopes, brought pride to Pakistanis and ended at a note of glimmering hope in a cloud of despair. The News International said there is a long list of heroes, a couple of them dead but others alive, who performed acts of bravery, collectively and individually, in different fields of life, starting from the Supreme Court of Pakistan to parliament, legal fraternity, sports, bureaucracy, media, science and technology, intelligentsia and politics. The Express Tribune in its review said on the surface of it all, 2010 was another volatile year in terms of security and political and economic stability, compounding people’s miseries exponentially. But despite all odds, no event was powerful enough to crush the hopes of the resilient Pakistani nation, which has been looking for an affluent future. Despite last year’s successful military operation in Malakand and Swat, major campaigns against al Qaeda and its affiliates in the northwest tribal badlands bordering Afghanistan remained inconclusive. Instead, a spill-over of the terror continued to haunt major cities like Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar.Operations continued in South Waziristan and upper reaches of the Orakzai Agency but did not yield any solid results, while an offensive is yet to be launched in North Waziristan, an area considered to be the epicentre of terror and main source of trouble in Afghanistan by Pakistan’s western allies. The apparent unwillingness of the Pakistani security establishment to move decisively against the notorious North Waziristan-based Haqqani terror network has apparently spurred Washington to step up a covert drone war.Domestically, unpopular US drone assault remained out of reach of the country’s security forces.Deadly suicide attacks on famous Sufi shrines of Abdullah Shah Ghazi in Karachi and Data Ganj Baksh in Lahore appeared to be attempts to deepen the already yawning sectarian divide. Those gifted with foresight are seeing the beginning of another division of society along Shia-Sunni lines: they fear that this will have deep and long-term impact on Pakistan’s fragile social fabric. Also on stake in 2010 was the future of the coming generations: analysts say they may have to wage an epic struggle to cope with issues ranging from access to basic needs to compiling more complicated ideological puzzles.last_img read more

Rep Berman Give local officials more input in alcohol regulation

first_img Categories: Berman News 19Feb Rep. Berman: Give local officials more input in alcohol regulation Local establishments with licenses to sell alcohol would have the freedom to extend their hours of operation upon approval from community officials under legislation introduced today by state Rep. Ryan Berman of Commerce Township.Under Berman’s plan, local governments will be given the option to allow community businesses the ability to sell alcohol between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.“We are simply giving local municipalities the option to allow alcohol permits for establishments desiring to extend their hours of operation,” said Berman, who serves as the majority vice chair of the House Regulatory Reform Committee. “It’s an optional program. By no means do communities have to act in accordance with this proposal and grant businesses extended hours. It’s strictly up to local officials on how they wish to regulate alcohol sales within their borders.”Berman said local governments which opt in could see a general increase in revenue.House Bill 4213 now moves to the House Regulatory Reform Committee for further consideration.last_img read more
