NEW LAWS HAVE come into effect today that aim to regulate hours given to those who are in casual employment. The Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2018 affects new and current employment contracts – here’s a breakdown of what it means. The new laws ensure that workers are entitled to a written statement of their terms of employment within the first five days of being hired, and much-criticised zero-hour contracts are banned (except in cases where emergency cover needs to be provided or in short-term absences). The new laws also mean that workers are entitled to a minimum payment if they show up for work but are sent home without work; this would be equal to three times the national minimum hourly rate of pay or three times the minimum hourly rate of pay set out in an Employment Regulation Order. Another new employment law change is the band of hours, which ensures that the contract a worker is on accurately reflects the hours they work.Trade union the ICTU gives the following example to illustrate that last point: “if a worker’s contract guarantees 10 hours per week but for the last 12-month period the worker has worked an average 25 hours per week, they are entitled to be placed on a band of hours that guarantees them a minimum of 21 hours per week.”Here are the band ranges so you can find out where your job fits on: Image: Shutterstock/Rawpixel.com What are the new ‘casual employment’ laws that came into force today? Zero-hour contracts are banned in most circumstances from today. 37 Comments 49,029 Views Monday 4 Mar 2019, 9:52 PM Image: Shutterstock/Rawpixel.com Share1600 Tweet Email17 Mar 4th 2019, 9:52 PM https://jrnl.ie/4523667 Short URL By Gráinne Ní Aodha A: 3 – 6 hoursB: 6 – 11 hoursC: 11 – 16 hoursD: 16 – 21 hoursE: 21 – 26 hoursF: 26 – 31 hoursG: 31 – 36 hoursH: 36 hours and overOther amendments to employment law means that employees on a temporary contract must be given the expected duration of the contract. If it’s a fixed contract they must be told the end date. Two new offences are being introduced as part of the new laws:An employer who, without reasonable cause, fails to provide an employee with the Day 5 statement within one month of commencement of employment will be guilty of an offence. An employer who deliberately or recklessly provides false or misleading information as part of the Day 5 statement will be guilty of an offence.Employees who aren’t given their core terms of employment in time can bring a claim to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). An employee must have one month’s continuous service with that employer before they are entitled to bring the claim. The amendment also provides that the evidence that a witness gives at an unfair dismissal hearing at the WRC or Labour Court is privileged. It also means that a witness who is compelled to attend the hearing or provide relevant information, and does not do so, is liable to prosecution. From this month, a person starts their first job aged 20 or over must receive the full National Minimum Wage rate of €9.80 (training rates vary between €7.35 to €8.82 an hour for those aged 18 and over).President Michael D Higgins signed The Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2018 into law on Christmas Day – you can find more detailed information here. Back in the days of geek prehistory, a T-shirt was a signal to the world around you that you cared about your nerdy pursuits enough to fly them like a flag. Companies like Graphitti Designs contracted with movie studios and comics publishers to create shirts with our favorite characters and sold them up on the walls of comic book stores and through mail order. The computer revolution has enabled the T-shirt world to become something totally new – affordable production and distribution means that shirts can be printed in small quantities and sold anywhere in the world. Starting with Threadless, dozens of companies popped up letting artists and designers show their stuff. It’s a better time than ever to be a geek fashionista, and if you’re looking to expand your wardrobe we’re going to help you out every week… on T-Shirt Tuesday. This week: filling the closet in the Tardis with a bevy of Doctor Who shirts.Doctors & DaleksTwo great tastes that taste great together – D&D and Doctor Who. This shirt from artist CreativeOutpouring fuses a retro-styled Dungeons & Dragons book cover design with an illustration of the Doctor wielding his Sonic Screwdriver against a menacing Dalek. We wish there really was a tabletop Doctor Who role-playing game, but you’d have to be one hell of a DM to make that work.$20, buy it here.Doctor StarmanFantasy casting the next Doctor is practically an Olympic sport for geeks, but one face that we’ll never see commanding the Tardis is the late David Bowie, alas. The English musician would have been incredible in the role, at least according to this T-shirt by jimiyo. This guy has some serious illustrative chops, reminding us of classic X-Men artist Paul Smith, and not a line is out of place on this impressive design.$20, buy it here.Dalek NouveauProbably the most recognizable of the Doctor Who villains, the Daleks are pitiless aliens horribly mutated and wedged into tank-like vehicular shells equipped for just one thing: exterminating. Not what we’d consider inspiration for beauty, but illustrator MareveDesign managed to interpret them in a classic Art Nouveau style, and it resulted in a pretty damn classy T-shirt. Great color choices on this one, too.$20, buy it here.Burning Up A SunThis exceptional design from artist RebelArt pays tribute to one of the most potent emotional moments the new series has delivered – the farewell of companion Rose Tyler, sucked into a parallel universe as a consequence of stopping the war between the Daleks and the Cybermen with Earth as the battleground. That relationship was integral in modernizing the Doctor, and when it ended, it was a serious shock to the system. The Doctor’s goodbye to her is truly iconic.$20, buy it here.Weeping Angels Biker ClubThe Doctor Who franchise is notable for its dedication to creating consistently memorable antagonists, and one of the best recent examples is the Weeping Angels. Introduced in 2007, they’re “quantum-locked” humanoids who resemble stone statues and can move at incredible speeds but only when they’re not being observed. One touch is enough for them to send you to the past and feed off the time energy of your canceled life. This slick design from APSketches re-contextualizes them as a Sons of Anarchy-esque biker gang.$20, buy it here.Who Is In Wonderland? One of the reasons that Doctor Who lends itself so well to mash-ups like this is the titular character’s ability to insert himself into just about any context. Case in point: the classic illustration by John Tenniel for Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland looks just fine with a Tardis dropped down in the middle of it. In fact, Alice would probably have made for a pretty good companion, given a few more years. She’s certainly seen her share of weird stuff already.$20, buy it here.Dia De Los CybermenThe Cybermen are one of the series’ most recognizable villains, a group of cyborgs who have pestered the Doctor through most of his incarnations. Originally humans from Earth’s twin world Mondas, they began replacing parts of their bodies with machinery to stave off death and transformed into emotionless creatures of pure murderous reason. This quirky design from Kannaya reinterprets their head design in Mexican “Day of the Dead” style.$20, buy it here.London CallboxPeter Capaldi, the Twelfth Doctor, once played in a punk band called “the Dreamboys,” so he’d probably appreciate this mash-up that inserts our favorite Time Lord into the cover of the Clash’s classic London Calling. Illustrator Captain_RibMan packs this one with texture and detail, making it a good pick for geeks living at that intersection of underground music and cult Brit TV.$20, buy it here.Regeneration Is ComingThe Doctor’s iconic Tardis is the show’s one real constant – no matter what actor steps into the role, what time period or distant planet they travel to, the clunky blue police box always looks the same. This elegant design from kharmazero is subtitled “a tribute to the next doctor,” and depicts the time machine in repose, waiting for its pilot to reincarnate and the adventures to begin once more.$20, buy it here.Doctor Who RocksIf you’re looking for something a little more whimsical, monsterobots has your number. This deftly cartooned design transplants all of your favorite Doctors and villains into the iconic early 80s Schoolhouse Rock style, making it a charming tribute to warping brains with history through the ages.$20, buy it here.Bad WolfRose Tyler’s reinvention as the cosmic entity Bad Wolf helped put so much of the Ninth Doctor’s adventures into context. The Wolf featured the Time Vortex at the heart of the Tardis coupled with a human form, possessing massive power. This slick design by zerobriant puts a really sweet illustration of Rose at the forefront along with a subtle color scheme to make for a really top-notch shirt.$20, buy it here.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
