Unai Emery has hailed Mesut Ozil for delivering when Arsenal “needed him to” during a Premier League clash with Burnley. The Gunners headed into a home date with the Clarets looking to offer a positive response to back-to-back defeats in league and cup competition.Ozil’s role in their plans had dominated the pre-match build-up, with the German playmaker having seemingly fallen out of favour to see questions asked of his future. Emery had, however, stated prior to the game that the World Cup winner still had an important role to play and backed up that statement by handing the 30-year-old a starting berth and the captain’s armband.Ozil rewarded that show of faith with a talismanic performance which saw him play a pivotal role in Arsenal’s first and third goals in a 3-1 victory.Emery told BBC Sport afterwards of an eye-catching showing from a man with a point to prove: “It was a big performance today and afterwards I said congratulations for your work.“Every player showed his quality and their characteristics. We needed him to work to help us today and he did.”Ozil was not the only player to deliver for Arsenal, with the Gunners’ defence standing up well to a physical battle with Burnley’s frontmen.Emery was delighted with the collective showing from his side, as they returned to winning ways courtesy of two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a late effort from Alex Iwobi. The Spaniard added: “It was a tough match. It was difficult because they pushed a lot with long balls and the second action.“But we played well with our body and our character was good. The victory was deserved and in the table we are closer to Tottenham and Chelsea.“I think we won today not because we played well but because every player had a very big commitment.“We knew Burnley are an organised team and were going to push us but we didn’t lose too many long balls from the goalkeeper.“I think we can controlled the match like we wanted. We had to make an alteration of our game plan but after I think our game plan gave us the victory.“We’re scoring lots of goals but we need more clean sheets and our defeat today was maybe that.”Arsenal remain outside the Premier League’s top four at present, but remain very much within touching distance of the Champions League spots as the games come thick and fast during the festive period. The Argentine’s hat-trick carried him over the 50-goal barrier for 2018 – a figure he has achieved in eight of the last nine years – and means he has won more top-flight matches than any other player in the club’s history.“I don’t know how to label him. I don’t know how to answer the most repeated question,” head coach Ernesto Valverde said, clearly having run out of superlatives for the South American, who finished only fifth in the recent the 2018 Ballon d’Or voting.“He’s the one who makes us play, who gives us amazing goals … we just have to enjoy him.”Indeed, so prolific has Messi been alongside strike partner Luis Suarez, the duo have accumulated more goals than both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid this season.Celta’s task is to somehow find a way of halting this juggernaut, but the Galicians are confident.“The game comes at a good time because we’re in the middle of a good run of results and play, despite the recent draw against Leganes,” midfielder Jozabed Sanchez said. “Additionally, in recent years we’ve been able to make things difficult for them.”Celta may be undefeated in their last three league matches, but the likes of Huesca, Villarreal and Leganes do not measure up to the size and quality of Barca. Indeed, the last time Celta faced one of the league’s big guns, they went down 4-2 to Real Madrid at home. Barcelona, therefore, remain hot favourites – particularly with Messi in such fantastic form.
Jamie Vardy scored on his 250th Leicester City appearance as the Foxes ended an 18-year wait for a Premier League win at Chelsea in a 1-0 triumph. The former England striker had been starved of service until clinically finishing a brilliant Leicester counter early in the second half, which ultimately proved enough to clinch a first win at Stamford Bridge since 2000.It was a hugely frustrating afternoon for Maurizio Sarri’s side, who controlled large periods of the game and saw Eden Hazard – one shy of 100 competitive goals for the Blues – hit the crossbar in the first half as well as Marcos Alonso strike the post in the 91st minute when clean through. Chelsea, who lost a league match at home for the first time under Sarri, consequently head into Christmas 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, while rumours that Leicester were planning on sacking Claude Puel may subside after this much-needed win.The Blues’ play was sharp if lacking in incisiveness early doors, although David Luiz was desperately close to meeting Pedro’s flick on from a Willian corner.1-0 to #lcfc@Madders10 @vardy7 #CheLei pic.twitter.com/mzxhsZi4Ij— Leicester City (@LCFC) December 22, 2018Leicester had an almighty let-off when Hazard pounced on Harry Maguire’s poor control and rifled an effort against the crossbar.Neither team had a shot on target until the 41st minute with Kepa Arrizabalaga’s strong hand keeping out Wilfred Ndidi’s stinging 30-yard drive.Willian tamely struck at Kasper Schmeichel after a fine team move, while Jorginho’s well-hit half-volley forced the Leicester keeper into action again as Chelsea finished the half strong. The Blues were caught cold six minutes after the break, though. Leicester launched a counter-attack that led to James Maddison slipping in Vardy to emphatically fire past Kepa when one-on-one.Schmeichel was sharp to keep out Hazard’s left-foot effort from a tight angle, and at the other end Kepa’s spill from Marc Albrighton’s cross needed swift action from Cesar Azpilicueta to deny Vardy.Leicester’s goal lived a charmed life in the closing stages with Antonio Rudiger heading wide from point-blank range and Alonso fluffing his lines by striking the left post when one-on-one.What does it mean? Relief for Puel, but Blues’ title hopes stungPuel has faced rumours this week that squad disharmony and a return of one league win in six could lead to his sacking, but a big triumph here is a much-needed early Christmas present. There will be little festive cheer for the hosts, though, who are 11 points off the top and stewing over a first home defeat since April.Christmas party time for VardyLeicester fans love to affectionately sing ‘Jamie Vardy’s having a party’ and he had cause for celebration with a typically clinical counter-attacking goal. The Foxes had done little to provide chances for Vardy until his goal, but when it came he did not disappoint. Ricardo Pereira and Ben Chilwell also impressed for the away side.Kante paying a high priceThere is arguably no better defensive midfielder on the planet than N’Golo Kante. But Sarri’s insistence on playing the France international in an advanced position to slot Jorginho deeper in his midfield is not bringing the best out of the former Leicester star. On a few occasions, Kante found himself high up the pitch but lacking the attacking quality to break the Foxes’ rear-guard.Key Opta Facts- Chelsea have failed to find the back of the net in two of their last four home Premier League games, as many as in their previous 21.- Jamie Vardy has scored 13 goals in his last 15 Premier League appearances. – Leicester midfielder James Maddison has created 41 goal-scoring chances in the Premier League this season, more than any other English player. Manchester United cruised to an impressive 5-1 Premier League victory over Cardiff City on Saturday in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match in charge.Three goals in the first half from Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial and a brace from Jesse Lingard earned all three points at Cardiff City Stadium, with Victor Camaras’ penalty proving little consolation.United stay sixth in the table, but the manner of the performance, as well as the result – the first time the side have scored five times in the league since Alex Ferguson’s final game – will have been a welcome sight for the travelling fans at the end of a week that saw Jose Mourinho’s contentious time in charge come to an end. The new United era got off to a stunning start when Rashford blasted home a free-kick from 30 yards out that left goalkeeper Neil Etheridge rooted to the spot.Almost 81 per cent of possession underlined United’s early control, and the scoreline reflected their dominance when Herrera’s strike looped off Greg Cunningham’s shoulder and into the net 29 minutes in.Cardiff were gifted a lifeline when Camarasa fired high into the net from the spot, but United’s two-goal lead was restored three minutes later, when Martial slotted beneath Etheridge after a sublime one-touch passing move involving Lingard and Paul Pogba, restored to the starting line-up.3 – Man Utd have scored three first half goals in a Premier League away game for the first time since November 2017 v Watford. It was 5-1 when Lingard rounded the keeper and slotted home from Pogba’s pass in the 90th minute to secure a first away league win since November 3 in style and give Solskjaer extra cause for celebration against the club he used the manage. 500/100 – Anthony Martial’s strike vs Cardiff was the 500th goal scored in the Premier League this season, in what was his 100th league game for Man Utd. Milestones. #CARMUN pic.twitter.com/y8fs7lJ9En— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) December 22, 2018What does it mean? Solskjaer has lifted the gloom’You make me happy, when skies are grey’ goes the song sung in Solskjaer’s honour by United fans, and that certainly seems to be the case at the end of a week that started with Mourinho apparently looking likely to stay in the job.United looked liberated in south Wales, playing expressive, attacking football and scoring the goals to go with it, while much-maligned players like Victor Lindelof seemed to exude confidence.Yes, Cardiff were undeniably poor and, yes, United are still sixth, but this was a match where the manner of the performance was arguably more important for the visitors than the result itself.Lingard given a licence to thrillLingard epitomised the freedom with which United’s attacking players performed. His assist for Martial’s goal and his well-taken penalty were the high points of a display full of verve, and Cardiff never quite got to grips with him.Bumbling Bamba a burdenBamba was dispossessed too easily by Pogba in the build-up to Herrera’s goal, his clumsy foul allowed Lingard to make it 4-1 and he missed a good chance for a goal. It was not his finest outing.Key Opta Facts- Since Alex Ferguson left the club, four of the five different managers to take charge of Manchester United have seen their side score 3+ goals in their first Premier League game (Moyes 4, Mourinho 3, Giggs 4 and Solskjaer 5). – Cardiff manager Neil Warnock suffered his 50th Premier League defeat, in what was his 92nd game in the competition – only Mick McCarthy (79), Danny Wilson (87) and Gary Megson (91) have reached 50 defeats in fewer games managed.- Anthony Martial has been directly involved in 70 goals for Manchester United in all competitions (45 goals, 25 assists); the most of any player for the club since his debut in September 2015.- Manchester United’s third goal against Cardiff – scored by Anthony Martial – was the 500th netted in the Premier League this season. Bayern Munich are leading the race to sign Chelsea attacker Callum Hudson-Odoi, but Goal understands the Bundesliga champions could face competition from Borussia Dortmund, who have also shown an interest in the 18-year-old.Hudson-Odoi is a valued asset at Stamford Bridge, but the youngster is questioning his long-term future at the club despite his age, having earned only two competitive starts under Maurizio Sarri this season.Chelsea are still hopeful that they can tie down the forward to a new five-year contract, as previously revealed by Goal, but a serious offer from a big overseas club could tempt the Blues to cash in on a player who is eager for playing time and out of contract in 18 months.Dortmund’s approach for Hudson-Odoi came during Chelsea’s talks with the club over Christian Pulisic’s availability, with the German side’s offer of a swap deal rejected by the Blues as they aim to tempt the player to put pen to paper on a new deal in January. It is understood that Bayern have a clear plan set out to bring the England youth to the Allianz Arena, the Bavarians eager to add some youth to their forward line as veteran wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben enter the final years of their career.Juventus and Real Madrid also retain an interest in Hudson-Odoi, who brought himself to the attention of clubs all around Europe since helping Chelsea’s academy team to a stunning quadruple in the 2017-18 season. The Blues are also keen to hold on to goalkeeper Marcin Bulka, who is regarded as the best young shot-stopper currently on the London club’s books. They have, however, already cemented deals for fellow keepers Nathan Baxter and Jamie Cumming to ensure talent continues to come through between the sticks.
Chelsea are 11 points away from Premier League leaders Liverpool and are staring down the reality that they are not title contenders this season.Maurizio Sarri has sent warnings that his side ‘are a step behind’ both Liverpool and Manchester City throughout the course of the season, even when his side racked up an impressive 18 game unbeaten streak in all competitions.A strong ‘big six’ in England’s top flight means a top-four finish is a battle, and Chelsea find themselves just outside the top tier of challengers alongside Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Some saw Sarri’s comments as pessimism at the time but the recent run has exposed shortcomings at Stamford Bridge that the Italian was evidently aware of – the same ones countryman Antonio Conte complained about before him.Strange mentality On any given day, Chelsea can beat anyone. Both Manchester City and Liverpool have found that out already this season, but the real challenge is to grind it out week after week. That’s where Chelsea are failing, they are unable to blow teams away like Man City, whereas Liverpool’s title charge has been characterised by a dogged mentality.Even the best teams have bad days but Chelsea seem to fade for large periods of games in which they had previously been doing well. In November, the issue for Sarri was starting games slowly but now it’s that Chelsea react poorly to hardship, most blatantly when the opposition scores.Leicester City earned their first win at Stamford Bridge for more than 18 years with a 1-0 win on Saturday and they deserved it. A strong Claude Puel game plan still needed resilience as Chelsea dominated possession and created more chances. However, Jamie Vardy’s second half strike saw Chelsea collapse and Sarri seemed baffled about his team’s lack of ability to mount a response.”I think we played very well for 55 minutes, we played very good football,” said the Italian. “After the goal the reaction was, for me, a strange reaction, not in the right direction, not as a team but as 11 different players. It was very strange.“I think we could have done better. We only had to continue to play like we did in the first part of the match. There was time to score but we reacted as a team that was shocked. I cannot understand our reaction.”There are many games that you could look to in highlighting examples of poor mentality from Chelsea and it doesn’t matter if they won, lost or drew. Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Tottenham and Leicester City… the examples are numerous of this ‘strange mentality’ that plagues Chelsea’s side and that is costing them points.A possible solution would be the emergence of leaders of the ilk of those long gone at Chelsea. The Blues’ most feared team featured the likes of John Terry, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard, whose mental toughness complimented their immense footballing talent. There’s also a need for Chelsea to kill off games more ruthlessly when they are on top.Lack of reliable striker Eden Hazard has emerged as Chelsea’s leading striker, operating as a false 9, with Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud only having six league goals so far between them.Chelsea have switched formations to play with eight-goal Hazard up front, but Leicester opted to use a deep block and give him, Pedro and Willian little space to weave their magic.Giroud is hard-working and a good influence for the team but, as proved at the World Cup, he needs others to take the role of goal scorer.Morata was meant to be the 20-, potentially 30-goal-a-season man but he has not shown himself robust enough to cope with the pressure of being under the spotlight. At Juventus and Real Madrid, the talent of his team-mates offered him some hiding space, but Chelsea invested £58 million plus add-ons in his potential to rise from the shadows and become a main man.So far it has been not so good for the 26-year-old since his move to west London. It has been a run of injuries, complaints, yellow cards and excuses rather than goals. Spain dropped Morata from their World Cup squad and Sarri left him out after switching to a false 9 against Man City.It is a sad indictment for a player who is clearly so talented. Patience is limited in football though and this might be an area where Chelsea look to the transfer market for a solution.Chelsea explored the possibility of signing Gonzalo Higuain in the last transfer window and are rumoured to be interested in him again. The false 9 may also be here to stay, but that might lead to Sarri looking for more clinical small forwards – with a host of names having been linked – including the likes of Christian Pulisic, Nabil Fekir and Ousmane Dembele. Some people think Sarri also needs a ‘Plan B’ but the 59-year-old was hired on the knowledge that he doesn’t deviate from his tactical plan. There’s also been unrest among his substitutes at Chelsea but this is just another example of history repeating itself after his spell at Napoli.Chelsea’s other concern is integrating their world-class youth players into their first team, but to do so they need a manager to stick around for a long time. They will hope that man is Sarri, so fixing the striker and mentality issues would be the best places to start, with bigger issues to be resolved along the way.Achieving great things takes time for most, just ask Pep Guardiola at Man City. Eden Hazard may end up leaving Chelsea for Real Madrid as “every player would love to play for them”, but Michael Essien is hoping the Belgian can be persuaded to stay put.Speculation regarding a switch to Spain continues to rage around a Stamford Bridge asset yet to commit to a new contract. He has made no secret of his admiration for the Blancos and certainly fits the ‘Galactico’ mould favoured by Florentino Perez at the Santiago Bernabeu. Essien, who represented Chelsea and Madrid during his playing days, admits the lure of one of world football’s most prestigious clubs may prove too much for a current Premier League star.He told Express Sport: “Hazard is one of the best players in the world.“The interest of Real Madrid, I only hear from people in the media. But I mean when Real Madrid come calling… every player would love to play for them.“He’s happy at Chelsea though and hopefully we can keep him.”Hazard is not the only player in west London to be generating exit talk ahead of another transfer window. The likes of Danny Drinkwater, Victor Moses and Andreas Christensen are also making plenty of gossip columns. The latter is being linked with a possible move to Barcelona, with Essien conceding that those not seeing regular game time for Chelsea will be weighing up their options. He added: “Every player wants to play.“Chelsea isn’t an easy place to come and the competition is very fierce.“At the end of the day, all the players work but it’s the manager who will pick who he wants to play.“When you’re not playing you get frustrated and you want to look elsewhere.“It’s up to them really but they have to keep working and then everyone gets their chance.”Chelsea have two more fixtures to take in before the winter window opens. They are set to face Watford on Boxing Day, before making another short trip out on the road to take in a derby date with Crystal Palace on Sunday.Maurizio Sarri is looking for his side to offer a positive response in those games to recent setbacks which have left the Blues fourth in the Premier League table and looking over their shoulder.
Real Madrid’s form after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure is a “warning” to Barcelona when it comes to Lionel Messi, according to former Blaugrana player Jordi Cruyff.Ronaldo, 33, made a surprise move from Madrid to Juventus for a reported €100million in July after spending nine seasons with the LaLiga giants.Madrid initially struggled to cope with Ronaldo’s absence and are eight points adrift of league leaders and rivals Barca – although they hold a game in hand. Retired Educator, Patricia Eves-McKenzie, is honoured to be a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation for doing something that she loves.Proud of her long and distinguished career in education, moulding students from the primary to the tertiary levels, Mrs. Eves-McKenzie says that things might have turned out differently, as there was a time when she stepped away from the profession. She embarked on a 10-year journey out of education, which had been her mainstay for 17 years and ventured into unfamiliar territory.Patricia Eves-McKenzie first entered the classroom at Mona Preparatory School in September 1967 as a young graduate straight out of Shortwood Teachers’ College. She remained at Mona for one year, after which she moved on to the then Tarrant Junior Secondary (now Tarrant High) School where she remained for nine years. There she taught mathematics, English, Spanish and music. She would eventually become the first Vice-Principal of the newly opened Edith Dalton James Secondary (now High) School and served that institution for seven years. Following her stint at Edith Dalton James, Mrs. Eves-McKenzie decided to step away from the classroom for other pursuits.During the 10 years away from the classroom, Mrs. Eves-McKenzie’s love for teaching never waned, and she continued to provide support for students.“I did not leave the profession totally, because I travelled around the island with the team that was adjudicating the inter-schools debating competitions,” she informs. “I also did a stint with the Children’s Own, where I went into schools and helped to train the teachers on how to use the (publication) in language teaching, so I was not totally away from it,” she adds. She would eventually return to the field of education in January 1994 as principal of Dunrobin High School. She says it was the late Albert Karram, who was a leader in her church at the time, who encouraged her to take up the job as principal.“That man brought me to tears when he told me that the children needed me. I sat and cried.”“So I went back. I had to. I really did not think I had a choice, because teaching was my first love and my students are precious to me,” she continues. In February 1998, after leaving Dunrobin, Mrs. Eves-McKenzie took her skills to the tertiary sector, lecturing at the University of Technology (UTech), where she remained for 18 years until her retirement in September 2016. At UTech, she lectured in psychology and counselling.Mrs. Eves-McKenzie tells JIS News that although she taught students at all stages, she believes that it was at the high school and university levels that her impact was greatest. She finds the greatest joy in seeing her students do well in their chosen fields and reaps great satisfaction from seeing them succeed. “I have always tried to motivate the students to be their very best in every place that I have been. That has been my mantra, and I feel that I am satisfied that I have seen my students excel,” she adds.Mrs. Eves-McKenzie tells JIS News that on the day of the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation awards ceremony, “I walked into Jamaica House and a gentleman in full khaki police regalia looked at me and said, ‘My teacher; you taught me at Tarrant and today you are being awarded. I am honoured for you’.”.“That made me proud to see him standing there knowing that he is making a meaningful contribution to society,” she remarks. She further recalls that, recently, one of her students, whom she challenged to tap into his true potential, attained his professorship.“He called me and said, ‘You have to sit in the front row when I am doing my inaugural lecture’. I was overwhelmed. For me, they just need to be their best. That is enough for me,” she says. Mrs. Eves-McKenzie tells JIS News that she remained in teaching because she felt that she had something to offer. She says that for every group of students who began school, she would decide to stay with the group until they had completed their studies, and that the cycle kept repeating itself.“At UTech, I would be backstage at graduation when they would get their degrees, sharing their joy, because I know where many of them are coming from. I was always there to say to them there is another level and they must go for it,” she notes.Although officially retired, Mrs. Eves-McKenzie continues to help out at UTech, assisting in shaping the lives of her students.“I continue to journey with them and it is very fulfilling to see someone make changes that improve the quality of their life,” she beams. zoomImage Courtesy: Pacific Basin Hong Kong-based dry bulk shipping company Pacific Basin revealed its plans to fit scrubbers on a majority of its Supramaxes by the end of 2019.The company said that it positioned many of its owned ships for dry docking this year. Besides scrubbers, the company would also install ballast water treatment systems on both Handysize and Supramax vessels. The equipment is expected to set Pacific Basin up “for what we believe will be stronger years ahead. We think the market momentum will return and we are well positioned to benefit.”The dry bulk freight market is set to benefit in the second half of 2019 and early 2020 from many larger ships being taken out of service for several weeks for scrubber installation. The market for smaller dry bulk ships would benefit also over the longer term, as these units would consume more expensive low-sulphur fuel and therefore be incentivized to operate at slower speeds which reduces supply.“We expect to see seasonally stronger freight market conditions in the second half of 2019, although with continued volatility influenced by further uncertainty about the US-China trade war, slower economic growth than in recent years and the impact of African Swine Fever on soybean imports to China,” Pacific Basin noted.During the first half of 2019, the company’s result was adversely affected by weaker dry bulk freight market conditions. Net profit for the period dropped to USD 8.2 million, compared to USD 30.8 million reported a year earlier, while the company’s average Handysize and Supramax daily TCE earnings of USD 9,170 and USD 10,860 per day net were down 6% and 7% year-on-year.The first six months of the year also saw Pacific Basin expand its fleet with four secondhand vessels, including one Handysize and three Supramax units, and complete the sale of an older, small Handysize. Two further Supramax acquisitions delivered into the company’s fleet in July, expanding the owned fleet to 115 ships. Including chartered ships, Pacific Basin operated an average of 230 Handysize and Supramax ships overall during the first half of the year.

The AC Milan Brazilian legend has said his fellow countryman will have a “bright future” in the Italian Lega Serie ACampeonato Brasileiro club Flamengo and Italian Lega Serie A side AC Milan are currently negotiating for Lucas Paqueta. The footballer will be transferred to the Rossoneri in the January transfer window. And many have compared Paqueta with former AC Milan Kaka.“He’s a player who has a bright future ahead of him,” the former midfielder was quoted by Football Italia.“He’s already been called up to the Brazilian national team, but it’s better for him that we don’t make comparisons.”Serie A Betting: Match-day 3 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Considering there is a number of perfect starts so early in the Serie A season, as well as a few surprisingly not-so perfect ones….“I’ve seen so many of them in recent days, with me, with [Alexandre] Pato, with Ronaldinho, Cafu, Rivaldo… with all the Brazilians who have been part of Milan’s history,” he added.“We need to avoid these comparisons so he can come here and play calmly and peacefully. I’m confident.”Would Kaka ever return to AC Milan? This is what he said:“I spoke with Leo[nardo] and Paolo [Maldini]. Despite reports earlier today indicating that UBM has put some of its print magazines up for sale the company is saying that it’s the data services business that’s actually up for review. Included in that group are the Techinsights, Aviation, Global Trade and other related data services operations. The strategic review of UBM’s data services business was announced back in July during the company’s 2012 interim results presentation. According to a spokesperson, there are one or two print titles associated with these groups, but the bulk of any print products included in the review are directories. “This is purely about the data services business, it does not touch the magazine business,” says the spokesperson. The company had indeed secured Credit Suisse to run the review, which has been going on since July and, according to the spokesperson, may not end up in a sale. “It may or may not end up as a sale. The point about this process is UBM, like any other media company, has limited capital resources and is challenged in figuring out where it should be deployed.”The review is expected to last until spring 2013. Here’s a choice bit of UBM CEO David Levin’s presentation during the interim results meeting: “We’ve made relatively few acquisitions in the data services area and that’s not been for lack of choices. It’s been for the fact that we’ve seen better returns on the capital that we’ve been able to deploy against our events business and against PR Newswire. So it’s in light of that that we’ve sat back and thought how do we take the strategy forward and one of the consequences of that has been a choice that we announced today, the beginning of a strategic review for our data services business. That strategic review is effectively considering three questions: What’s it worth to us? What would it be worth to a third party? And the third question is, how would we redeploy the capital internally and what would the yield on that be?”As it turns out, that capital would most likely be put against the PR Newswire group and UBM’s events, two favored and better performing groups as Levin indicates in his statement. According to UBM financials, Data Services revenues were $145 million at the half, down from $161 million from the same period last year. The group accounts for about 18 percent of total revenue.
