N.Y. Giants On A Roll

first_imgEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The best thing about the early part of the NFL season is how quickly teams can change.Take the New York Giants as an example. Just a week ago, Tom Coughlin’s team was winless in its opening two games. Eli Manning was looking over the hill and uncomfortable in the new West Coast offense. The much-hyped defense had not recorded a turnover and there were visions of another 0-6 start and a third straight year out of the playoffs.Guess what? The Giants (2-2) have not only turned things around in the past five days with wins over Houston and Washington — a 45-14 decision on Sept. 25th — they are rolling.Manning is looking like a Super Bowl MVP again. Second-year tight end Larry Donnell has emerged as one of the biggest surprises in the league. The defense has had nine takeaways in the two wins as the defensive line has made life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. The turnaround has many jumping on the Giants’ bandwagon and Coughlin telling his players to relax. His message is simple. They are not as bad as they looked in losses to Detroit and Arizona and they are not as good as they looked lately. They are a .500 team.“We have to continue that attitude about having that chip on our shoulder and having a lot to prove,” Coughlin said as his players prepared for a long weekend off. ” … I do know this, that if we want to accomplish what we would like to, the improvement meter has to go up weekly.”After being limited to 28 points in the first two games, Manning and company have gotten new coordinator Ben McAdoo’s offense in high gear, averaging 434 yards and 37.5 points the past two games.Manning has completed 49 of 67 passes for 535 yards, six touchdowns and an interception that wasn’t his fault. The running game has produced 347 yards and Donnell has emerged a playmaker, leading the team with 25 catches for 236 yards and four touchdowns, three in the first half.“No one likes to start 0-2, but two wins in a couple of days, four days, feels good,” said Manning, who is hitting almost 67 percent of his passes this season.Donnell has come out of nowhere to be his favorite target. The former Grambling State product has used his athleticism to become a hard matchup for opponents.“He works his butt off,” said safety Quintin Demps, who replaced Stevie Brown in the starting lineup and had an interception.“He deserves it. Eli did a good job putting the balls where they had to be. He deserves it. He’s a good player and he’s only going to get better.”The defense has been outstanding, taking the ball away nine times, with seven setting up drives that started in the opposition territory. In the past two games, New York has started 10 drives inside its opponents’ territory, while neither the Texans nor Redskins started a drive in Giants’ territory in those games.“We have always known the potential that has been on this team and with the leaders we have,” cornerback Prince Amukamara said. “I am just glad that no one kept their head down and everyone just kept with it when we were 0-2.“I know it is easy to get down on yourself when you lose games, but we knew the games we lost, the other team made plays, but we definitely were our own worst enemy with the penalties and assignment busts. We knew that if we eliminated all those things we’d have a great chance to win ball games.”The Giants won’t play again until they face the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 5 at MetLife Stadium. The schedule through Thanksgiving is tough with Philadelphia, Dallas, Indianapolis, Seattle and San Francisco on tap.“I think that we all knew this thing was going to click at some point and we were taking steps as the early part of the season went on, the first two games went on,” said receiver Victor Cruz, who has had 100-yard receiving games the past two games.“You could see the progression in our offense and it was just a matter of when it was going to happen. We kicked up right at the right time in order for us to keep our goals in task and continue to head in the right direction.”(TOM CANAVAN, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Olympiakos Beats Juventus, 1-0

first_imgTweetPinShare0 Shares PIRAEUS — Olympiakos pulled off another Champions League upset by beating Juventus 1-0 on Oct. 22 to go level on points with Group A leader Atletico Madrid.Swiss midfielder Pajtim Kasami fired the winner past Gianluigi Buffon in the 36th minute. The goal arrived after Alejandro Dominguez found striker Kostas Mitroglou, whose cutback was steered into the back of the Juventus net by Kasami.“Mitroglou got me the ball with his first touch. You don’t have a lot of time to react in the Champions League … so I’m very happy,” Kasami said.Atletico, which routed Malmo 5-0 on Oct. 16, tops the group on goal difference ahead of Olympiakos. Both teams have six points, while Juventus and Malmo have three points each.Dominguez sliced open the Italian defense all evening at Karaiskaki stadium, missing two scoring chances himself and setting up Kasami in the 60th for a shot that rolled just past the post.Goalkeeper Roberto maintained Olympiakos’ lead as Juventus piled on pressure in the last 25 minutes, twice stopping goal-bound shots from Alvaro Morata and also denying Carlos Tevez.Morata, who saw his second shot hit the crossbar after Roberto’s save, said he regarded the Spaniard as being “one the best goalkeepers in the world.”Olympiakos, which had already caused an upset in Group A by beating last year’s finalist Atletico 3-2, showed no signs of any nerves after a summer overhaul of its squad had led to lapses in defense in recent weeks.“It’s a magic night — we had a fantastic crowd and fantastic players. It’s a real team, that’s what we want,” Olympiakos coach Michel Gonzalez said. “I won’t say if I think we are close to qualifying, but I will tell you that we’ll be celebrating tonight’s win.”The Greek champions earned their victory after overcoming an early scare, with Omar Elabdellaoui heading a loose ball off the line in the 12th minute, while a Tevez header that found the net eight minutes later was ruled offside by Serbian referee Milorad Mazic.Buffon congratulated Roberto after the match, and veteran Italy star Andrea Pirlo was clapped by the home crowd when substituted in the second half despite his lackluster performance.Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said he had no regrets starting the 35-year-old free kick specialist. “I don’t think the squad was the problem, but the mistakes they made,” he said. “We can still qualify. I believe that.”last_img read more

Olympiakos Over Levadiakos 2-1

first_imgATHENS — Ibrahim Affelay scored a second-half goal and set up the injury-time winner to allow defending champion Olympiakos to overcome an early deficit and beat host Levadiakos 2-1 in the Greek league on Dec. 13.The win brought Olympiakos within a point of league-leading PAOK, which hosts Kerkyra on Dec. 14.Javier Tomas scored for Levadiakos in the second minute when he headed in from a corner kick.Affelay equalized in the 73rd, despite slipping as he shot a weak, bouncing drive from the edge of the area. But there was nothing lucky about the pinpoint cross with which the Dutchman, on loan from Barcelona, found Costas Mitroglou for him to slot home. Also, Platanias beat Niki Volos 3-1, and Panetolikos drew 0-0 at Kalloni.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img

Rangers Devour Coyotes, 5-1

first_imgGLENDALE, Ariz. — Moments after securing his 500th NHL win, New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault deflected the attention to the “very good players” he’s had over the years. Two shined on Feb. 14. Rick Nash was no surprise. The other, Cam Talbot, has allowed the Rangers to stay hot despite a key injury.Nash scored his NHL-best 35th goal early in a four-goal third period, and Talbot stopped a penalty shot in a 34-save performance in the Rangers’ 5-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Vigneault’s milestone night.“I feel very privileged and fortunate to have all those good players through the years,” said Vigneault, who became the 21st coach in league history to reach 500 wins.Nash ripped a shot from the right circle off the crossbar and in 1:19 into the final period to make it 2-1. It was Nash’s seventh goal in eight games as he moved closer to matching his career high of 40 goals with Columbus in 2008-09.But Talbot, who made his sixth straight start for the injured Henrik Lundqvist, was tested just a few minutes later.Dominic Moore hauled down Tobias Rieder, setting up Arizona’s second penalty shot in a week. Both failed. Talbot gobbled up Rieder’s backhand attempt.“Cam’s been the backbone of our team,” Nash said. Added Vigneault: “He’s been waiting for an opportunity to prove he can play on a consistent level.”And once Talbot stopped the penalty shot, the Rangers’ potent offense took over in their third straight win.Chris Kreider, Marc Staal and Lee Stempniak also scored for the Rangers and Kevin Hayes added a short-handed goal. The Rangers have scored 16 goals in three games and 33 in their last nine.Offense has been a constant in Vigneault’s career. The 53-year-old, who also had stints coaching Montreal and Vancouver, improved to 500-355-35-72 in the NHL. Vigneault moved into a tie with Toe Blake for the 20th most wins in the league. Pat Burns (501) is next on the list.It was another frustrating night for Arizona in its seventh straight home loss.Antoine Vermette scored for the Coyotes, while Mike Smith made 28 saves. The Coyotes have not managed more than two goals in any game during their home drought. They lost a team-worst eight straight home games earlier in what’s been a lost season.“We’ve got a lot of try in us right now, but were having a hard time capitalizing on anything,” coach Dave Tippett said. The Rangers were without defenseman Dan Boyle (illness), who had scored the first goal in each of New York’s last two games, and got off to a sluggish start. After a sloppy first period, the Rangers took a 1-0 lead 54 seconds into the second period when the speedy Kreider raced past Arizona’s Michael Stone and wrapped a backhand inside the far post. But the Coyotes, who got center Joe Vitale back after a nine-game injury absence, looked sharp early in its second game in as many nights.Moments after Lucas Lessio fanned with an open net, Arizona tied it when Vermette knocked in Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s rebound at 6:33 of the second. But it was Ekman-Larsson’s poor luck later that has defined the Coyotes. On the power play and trailing 2-1, Ekman-Larson broke his stick on a shot. It led to Hayes’ goal as he moved past a diving and stickless Ekman-Larsson on a breakaway.“All I can say,” Ekman-Larsson said, “is it’s just a bad break.”(MIKE CRANSTON)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Putin Jumps Into Doping Scandal

first_imgMOSCOW — Stung by a report accusing Russia of a vast state-sponsored doping program, Vladimir Putin will meet with the head coach of the country’s track federation on Nov. 11.A report Nov. 9 by a commission of the accused Russia of widespread doping and cover-ups affecting track and field athletes, including Olympic medalists. It said that agents from the FSB intelligence service interfered with the work of a doping lab during last year’s Winter Olympics in the Russian resort of Sochi.Russian officials fought back against the report, saying it failed to prove its main points and suggesting the existence of a conspiracy to vilify Russia.“As long as there is no evidence, it is difficult to consider the accusations, which appear rather unfounded,” Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said of the report.Because of the report, Russia has been threatened with suspension from track and field competitions, including next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The Russian track federation said head coach Yuri Borzakovsky, a former Olympic 800-meter champion, will meet Putin at a sports center in Sochi on Nov. 11.While the meeting between Putin and Russian sports leaders was planned as a discussion of preparations for next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Acting Federation President Vadim Zelichenok told The Associated Press the doping allegations could be discussed.“There may be a conversation, but not necessarily within the framework of the main meeting,” Zelichenok told the AP by telephone. In the first move to implement a recommendation made in the report, WADA revoked the accreditation of the country’s anti-doping lab in Moscow. That blocks all testing of samples, which will now be transported to another WADA-accredited lab outside Russia. The WADA commission says tests were routinely falsified at the lab to protect top Russian athletes. The facility is headed by Grigory Rodchenkov, who stands accused of concealing doping, extorting money from athletes and destroying 1,417 samples to stop WADA investigators from gaining access to them. The report recommended a lifetime ban for Rodchenkov.Nikita Kamaev, Executive Director of the Russian anti-doping agency known as RUSADA, said that Rodchenkov’s lab had “ceased functioning” but said RUSADA is still operational.“The Russian agency completely complies with the requirements of WADA at the current time,” Kamaev said, adding that the agency is preparing a detailed response to all issues raised against it in the WADA report. The Russian agency faces possible suspension by WADA after the report, which accused it of numerous failures in its testing program, including notifying athletes ahead of time for supposedly surprise tests, colluding with coaches and allowing some banned athletes to continue competing.Kamaev is one of a number of Russian officials to say the report is biased against Russia. “Some of the issues have a particular acuteness and are, if you like, politicized,” he said, refusing to go into further detail.Allegations that FSB agents infiltrated the testing process are the product of an “inflamed imagination” and more suited to a spy film, Kamaev added.Earlier in the day, Zelichenok said in comments quoted by Russian media that the report contains “an element of material made to order,” without specifying who might have manipulated the report.Zelichenok also appealed to the sport’s governing body to show “prudence” and allow Russian track and field athletes to compete at next year’s Olympics.(JAMES ELLINGWORTH, AP Sports Writer) TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Sixers Shock The Nets, 95-89

first_imgPHILADELPHIA — For the first time in more than a month, the Philadelphia 76ers won a game. But instead of celebrating too much, many of their thoughts were instead with a teammate in the hospital.Carl Landry scored 16 points, Nerlens Noel had 13 points and 11 rebounds and the 76ers snapped a 13-game losing streak with a 95-89 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on March 11.Ish Smith added 10 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Sixers (9-56), who won their first game since Feb. 6 – also against Brooklyn – despite dealing with several injuries, including a potentially serious one to Robert Covington.Covington finished with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point range before exiting with 9:40 left in the third quarter. He was kicked in the face by teammate Jerami Grant in a collision under the basket. He remained on the court for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher and transported to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was being evaluated for a possible neck injury.“It was a significant collision,” 7ers coach Brett Brown said. “In one fell swoop, you lose your 3 and your 4 men. … When you see a player, a teammate, a friend being taken off the court on a stretcher, it’s different than someone walking off the court with a sprained ankle.”Grant also did not return following the collision and was evaluated for a concussion, and Richaun Holmes later left with a strained right Achilles.Leading scorer Jahlil Okafor also missed his sixth straight game for the depleted Sixers. It was announced before the game that Okafor will have season-ending surgery on his right knee.Brook Lopez scored 24 points for the Nets (18-47), who have lost three straight and finished the longest road trip of the NBA season with a 3-6 mark. Brooklyn’s nine-game, 18-day trek began on Feb. 23 at Portland.Thaddeus Young, who spent first seven seasons with Philadelphia, had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Nets in a matchup between the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference.“Before anything else, my thoughts and prayers go out to Robert Covington,” Nets coach Tony Brown said. “He and Grant took a horrible fall and I just hope and pray he’s OK. As far as the game is concerned, they put pressure on you. They make it tough to run your offense. Credit to them — they deserved to win.”Trailing by 15 early in the second half, the Nets pulled within five at 76-71 heading into the fourth quarter and again got within five on Wayne Ellington’s 3-pointer with 4:10 left. But Landry, called into extra duty because of his team’s injury troubles, responded with buckets each time to help Philly preserve its lead. Landry’s dunk with 2:15 left, which followed a tough rebound on the other end, gave the Sixers a 92-84 lead and helped seal the win.Landry, who averages only 12 minutes per game, scored all but two of his points in the second half, adding eight rebounds and shooting 7 for 9 from the field in 25 minutes.“Carl Landry, oh my God,” Noel said. “He was able to get us some easy buckets that we definitely needed. Guys just did what they had to do.”(DAVE ZEITLIN)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Humiliation at Lord’s: Gut-wrenching defeat should come as no surprise

first_imgLord’s 2018 will haunt Indian cricket for years to come.India had climbed the ladder to become the world’s number one Test team after a string of victories at home. South Africa, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, Australia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan. No one was spared. Virat Kohli, the new captain wanted his men to play ruthless cricket and ruthless cricket it was.The spinners were unrelenting, the pacers were fast and accurate and the batsmen piled on the runs. Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli were on a record-breaking spree and all seemed well with the world.India had never looked so menacing, so invincible. Under their new leader, this Indian team was going places. They were even going to South Africa, England and Australia to show them their places. The South African challenge was over in a hurry. India lost the Cape Town Test by 72 runs. They then lost the Centurion Test by 135 runs before pulling off a consolation win on a dodgy pitch in Johannesburg. Also read: The curious case of Pujara and Dhawan: Constant Test struggles overseasEngland was going to be different, the Indian team promised. And some wise man decided to send the team out early to play the limited-overs phase to prepare for the Test series. Great idea. But what about the logic of preparing for the Duke with the white ball on flat surfaces. India failed to chase down 194 in the second innings of the Edgbaston Test (AP Photo)Come Edgbaston, India’s batsmen barring Kohli, were found out again. This time, chasing 194, India fell short again. Also read – Time running out: How long can Indian batsmen keep failing overseas?advertisementThe Indian team management did not seem to mind. They had come close. In Cape Town, India needed only 208; in Centurion, India needed only 287 and in Birmingham, India needed only 194. But India failed on each occasion. Kohli was happy his team had tried and fought hard. The team management consoled itself and reckoned if they could come so close, victory would be theirs at some point.Nobody wanted to see the danger signs. Why was it so hard to see that in each of those instances, there were two common factors: the bowlers and just one other batsman. In Cape Town, India were blown away, never mind the margin of defeat. The bowlers were exceptional and Hardik Pandya’s whirlwind 93 helped India walk away with some kind of dignity. Centurion was another poor show and had it not been for Kohli’s 153 in the first innings, who knows how much worse it would have got for the Indians! Also read – Virat Kohli finally admits he got team combination wrong after Lord’s humiliationAnd then at Edgbaston, India went down by 31 runs after failing to chase down 194. Virat Kohli had stood out again: 200 runs in the match. The other four in the top five managed only 99 together. R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami were heroic but the warning signals were ignored again: the other batsmen were not up to the task. India are 2-0 down in the five-match Test series (Getty Images)Lord’s was no surprise. How could you expect Kohli to stand up with the bat every time? He was bogged down by a back problem and like everyone else, he too was troubled by the swing under overcast skies. James Anderson and Stuart Broad, the old masters, loved what they saw in London: rain, cloud and scared Indian batsmen. Also read – Virat Kohli after innings defeat at Lord’s: We were outplayed and deserved to loseFor a change, the bowlers failed to fire. And therein lay in tatters the dignity of the world’s best Test side. They were humiliated. India managed to bat a combined 82.2 overs across the two innings. The entire first day was washed out and rain hampered play on Friday and Sunday. Yet, England wrapped up victory with over a day to spare. It wss humiliation. No matter what the conditions are, the world’s number one Test team is not expected to surrender like that! Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman, men who had starred in some of India’s most iconic Test triumphs were gutted. They were not happy with the lack of fight, with the lack of spirit India showed. The promise of ruthless cricket has not been delivered. The onus now is on the captain’s men to ensure their leader’s words do not sound hollow.last_img read more

Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL fresh renders once again reveal dual front-facing cameras

first_imgGoogle will be announcing its new Pixel phone on October 9, but it seems there is little that will come as a surprise for consumers now. Fro months now we have seen renders and live images of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL that has given us a pretty good picture of what to expect from these flagships. We know that the Pixel 3 will sport a 18:9 display while the 3 XL will get a notch that’s pretty deep, whether we like it or not. And if you weren’t convinced, we now have a fresh render of the two phones from noted tipster Evan Blass, which all but confirms the design including the dual front cameras.Blass tweeted renders of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL on popular demand. Unsurprisingly, the renders show a design we have all become pretty familiar with. Both the phone will come full screen displays, but with enough bezels house dual front-firing speakers. The Pixel 3 will have even bezels on the top and bottom while the Pixel 3 XL will sport a notch, and a pretty noticeable one at that. The renders also seem to confirm that both the phones will come with dual front cameras, a major upgrade from past Pixel phones.Google has so far avoided the trend of dual cameras while the rest of the industry has accepted it as a staple. Notably, all Pixel phones so far have managed to deliver exceptional photos with single sensors, so much so that they have been regarded as some of the best camera phones in the business. It will be interesting to see how Google will take things up a notch with dual front-facing cameras. As per recent reports, the camera setup on the front will include a pair of 8MP sensors, one with f/1.8 AF lens and the other with f/2.2 fixed focus lens. On the back, Google will continue with a single camera, most like with a 12MP sensor on both the phones.advertisementAs for everything else, it is widely expected that the Pixel 3 duo will be powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset. The base variant should come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The other major upgrade could be Qi wireless charging support as both the phones are expected to bring a full glass panels on the back. The phones will also ship with Android 9 Pie. We’ll know if Google has anything new to announce about the Pixel phones on October 9. At the event, we also expect new Pixel Buds, Pixelbook 2 and new Google Home speakers, among other things.ALSO READ: Google Pixel 3 price leaked ahead of launch, in India likely to cost above Rs 60,000last_img read more

Asia Cup 2018: India may look to test bench strength in dead-rubber vs Afghanistan

first_imgHaving already sealed their place in the final of the Asia Cup 2018 with successive wins over Bangladesh and Pakistan, defending champions India will now face a resurgent Afghanistan in the final match of the Super Four stage at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium here on Tuesday. On Sunday, India made a mockery of Pakistan’s below-par target of 237 with the opening duo of skipper Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan stitching together a 210-run stand to guide the Men-in-Blue to a 9-wicket win en-route the September 28 final.India had earlier defeated Bangladesh in their first Super 4 match, to remain as the only unbeaten team in the tournament so far.Asia Cup 2018: Rohit Sharma has done a great job as India captain, says Wasim AkramGoing in to Tuesday’s tie, India will aiming to continue their dominance over the Asian newbies, who have managed to give a tough fight in their narrow defeats to the likes of Pakistan and Bangladesh in their Super Four clashes. While Pakistan managed to win a last-over thriller over the Afghans by 3 wickets, Bangladesh on Sunday pipped Afghanistan by 3 runs to set up a virtual semi-final with Pakistan on Wednesday. Also Read – How Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan plotted record-breaking partnership vs PakistanRavi Shastri presents the Hitman & Gabbar Show. What happens when coach @RaviShastriOfc turns presenter and does a rendezvous with captain @ImRo45 & @SDhawan25 ? David John days numbered

first_imgThe hunter could turn hunted. Whispers emanating from the corridors of power in Hockey India suggest high performance director David John’s days are numbered.A day before leaving for the World Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, John had spoken to a few journalists. Even though Hockey India did not want him to act as the spokesperson, John set the cat among the pigeons by saying senior players are on notice after the failure to win gold in the Asian Games.Just after the disaster in Jakarta, when India lost to Malaysia in the semi-finals, Mail Today had written about coach Harendra Singh coming under the scanner. At that time, it was also mentioned some seniors were not up to the mark and would be under scrutiny. What John has blurted out is nothing new, just that he is perhaps unaware his own job is under the scanner. Sources told Mail Today on Tuesday these are tough moments for Indian hockey but Hockey India is watchful in their observations. In the normal course, heads may have rolled and the coach would have been the first to face the guillotine after the Asian Games. It’s well known with the Asian Champions Trophy to be held in Oman this month and the FIH World Cup in Bhubaneshwar at the end of the year, players, coaches, support staff, almost everyone, is under watch.David John’s contribution to Indian hockey has come under intense scrutiny. Questions are being asked what value he has brought to Indian hockey. With a shuffle in leadership roles within Hockey India, there is hope they will address issues seriously.advertisementOn Tuesday, Hockey India officially decided not to keep David in the selection committee for the World Cup as he “is biased against some players.”A galaxy of experts have been hired for the coaching staff, physical fitness, penalty corner expert and so on, but men’s hockey has slipped. In contrast, the women’s team has slogged hard and winning silver in the Asian Games was the saving grace. At a time when Roelant Oltmans has been making fast moves, from India to Pakistan and the latest being a three-month stint with the Malaysian Hockey Federation, there are some people in the Sports Authority of India who think he should be back as high performance director. However, Hockey India is opposed to it as they feel someone who has been relieved of services cannot come back.To be sure, the situation is precarious. The qualification process for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is not an easy one and persisting with Harendra Singh as the coach is a short-term option. The problem is Hockey India has hired and fired so many coaches from abroad, not many options are left. With well-known coaches hired by big teams till the 2020 Olympics, getting new hands to handle Indian men’s hockey is an uphill task. When Oltmans was there as high performance director, he was not a failure. He had done his job diligently, though to make him men’s coach — a forced decision — was not the most prudent one after Terry Walsh exited! The way Oltmans was eased out last year was most unfortunate. If people think he can be rehired, there should be no harm in once again looking at his credentials. Unlike David John, he knows hockey and what the Indian system is. He has seen both men’s and women’s hockey at close quarters. In any case, beyond the men’s World Cup, what happens cannot be predicted now. What can be said with certainty is players, coaches, support staff and the entire lot are under the scanner. Mass sacking is not on the cards but a change in men who actually run the sport on the ground is very much on the cards.last_img read more

Manchester City thrash Manchester United in Premier League derby

first_imgPremier League leaders Manchester City turned on the style with a 3-1 win over Manchester United in their derby clash on Sunday, leaving Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten side two points clear of Liverpool.David Silva fired City ahead in the 12th minute after a Raheem Sterling cross from the left was turned back across the goal by Bernardo Silva and the Spaniard took his time before blasting home.City doubled their lead in the third minute after the interval — Aguero bursting goalwards and playing a clever exchange with Riyad Mahrez, before thumping the ball, from a tight angle, past David de Gea.United manager Jose Mourinho brought on Romelu Lukaku for Jesse Lingard in the 57th minute and within seconds the Belgian forward helped get his team back in the game.Lukaku was brought down inside the area by City keeper Ederson and French forward Anthony Martial confidently converted the spot kick. But four minutes from the end City secured the victory, their 10th in 12 games this season, when the influential Bernardo Silva picked out substitute Ilkay Gundogan in the area and the German made no mistake as he made it 3-1.Eighth placed United are now 12 points behind City.last_img read more
