Midwest heat wave prompts early school dismissals

first_imgLINCOLN, Neb. — An unusual, late-summer heat wave has enveloped much of the Midwest, putting schools and sports events on hold.Schools in Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, the Dakotas and Illinois let out early on Monday as temperatures crept toward the mid-90s — beyond in some places. After-school sports practices and evening games were canceled in St. Paul, Minn., and misting stations were keeping people cool at the Minnesota State Fair, where about 90 fairgoers had been treated for heat-related illnesses over the weekend. The heat wave is supposed to last through much of the week, the National Weather Service said. Heat of this magnitude is unusual for this time of year, but not unprecedented. In Des Moines, Iowa, for instance, temperatures on Aug. 26 have reached at least 100 degrees at least six times since 1881.School districts took precautions, not wanting to put students and teachers in sweaty — and possibly dangerous — situations. In central Iowa, Marshalltown Community School District administrators canceled afternoon preschool classes on Monday and Tuesday and were planning to release other students two hours early. Parts of all 10 of district buildings have air conditioning, but some rooms aren’t connected.“The buildings can heat up pretty fast, especially when you have kids in there,” district spokesman Jason Staker said. “It’s not a good environment for students or teachers.”Five elementary schools in Fargo, North Dakota, canceled classes through Wednesday because the buildings weren’t fully air-conditioned. Temperatures inside them on Sunday ranged from 85 degrees to 90 degrees, Fargo Schools Superintendent Jeff Schatz said.last_img read more

UAF signs deal with New Mexicobased lab for future Arctic projects

first_imgThe University of Alaska Fairbanks is partnering with Sandia National Laboratory to conduct science in the Arctic. UAF recently signed an agreement with the Albuquerque, New Mexico based government owned lab, which also has research facilities on Alaska’s North Slope.UAF Geophysical Institute Director Robert McCoy says the agreement centers on some distinct areas of study, including disaster response, space weather, and a long running atmospheric radiation measurement program.”We’ve been collaborating there,” McCoy said. “But also, they’ve been flying unmanned aircraft, and we’ve been flying unmanned aircraft. So we’re trying to partner to do more of that kinda work.”McCoy says UAF and Sandia officials are discussing the possibility of building a base for unmanned aerial vehicles west of Prudhoe Bay near Oliktok Point, where UAF, Sandia and NASA have launched flights in recent years.”It’d be nice to have a more elaborate facility that we can carry out more science,” McCoy said.McCoy says the UAV base is in the early discussion phase, and there’s no funding yet. He says the base would allow flights to the North Pole, and be open to other universities and agencies to contract out for research. He says the agreement signed by UAF and Sandia allows fund sharing between the two entities to forward research projects.last_img read more

Sensex Nifty slump 9 in FY16 but post biggest monthly gains in

first_imgIndian stock markets ended the last day’s trading of financial year 2015-2016, which was also the F&O expiry day of the March series, on a flat note. The S&P BSE Sensex closed three points higher at 25,341, marking a loss of 9.35 percent over a 12-month period. The benchmark index had closed at 27,957.49 on March 31, 2015.However, the index posted its biggest monthly gain in four years, according to NDTVProfit. “In the month of March, the Sensex rose 10.17 per cent and the broader Nifty rallied 10.75 per cent posting biggest monthly gains in over four years,” the news channel reported. The Nifty also gained three points to settle at 7,738.40 Thursday, but was down 8.86 percent from its March 31 closing of 8,491. Most of the gold exchange traded funds (ETFs) ended with gains during the 12-month period, the gains ranging from 4.42 percent to 8.2 percent. The Nifty advance-decline ratio was evenly poised. The Sensex remained range-bound throughout the trading session on a day when Asian equity markets witnessed a mixed trend, despite US stocks extending gains for the third day Wednesday. Major Sensex gainers included TCS, Infosys, Sun Pharma and Hindustan Unilever, while stocks that dragged the index down were State Bank of India, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel and Coal India.Speculations that the government would cut the price of domestic gas by about 20 percent for the six-month period ended September 2015 saw shares of Cairn, GAIL, Indian Oil and ONGC falling. Stocks that climbed to a new 52-week high Thursday included NHPC, Hindustan Zince, Can Fin Homes and Ashok Leyland. The rally in the indexes in March has a lot to do with hectic buying by foreign institutional investors (FIIs), reversing their selling spree of the previous two months. Till March 30, FIIs had purchased stocks worth Rs 20,144 crore on a net basis, marking their fourth month of net buying in 2015-16.last_img read more
