More than 700 evacuated in Guanacaste due to flooding

Municipal engineers are assessing the condition of three bridges in cantonal routes at: Portegolpe, Hacienda Santa María and Santa Rosa.A swelling Andamojo River, which had isolated the communities of Lagarto, Marbella, Venado, Ostional and San Juanillo, now has begun to subside, which will allow rescue brigades from the Red Cross, firefighters, public security forces and CNE officials to deliver assistance to affected residents in those communities.A forecast from the National Meteorological Institute states that the low pressure system affecting the country remains stationary in front of the Costa Rican Caribbean coast, but is expected to weaken through Saturday. WASHINGTON, D.C. — It began with a bankruptcy sale in 1933, when a Republican businessman and presidential confidante reinvented himself as a newspaper publisher in the nation’s capital. It ended with an announcement that his descendants had sold the newspaper to an Internet wizard who lives in the Washington on the other side of the country.In between, The Washington Post and the family collectively known as the Grahams became inseparable, indistinguishable. They were journalism royalty known around the world but remained as distinctly Washington as the cop on the beat. Which one of them was.From Eugene Meyer to Philip Graham to Katharine Graham to Donald Graham to Katharine Weymouth, it was always a question of when power would shift from one generation to the next, not whether it would.Until Monday. The Graham family — icons of both Washington and journalism for the newspaper they led — had made a startling decision. The Post, they said, would be better off with somebody else.“We have loved the paper, what it stood for, and those who produced it,” said a letter from Donald Graham, the Washington Post Co. chairman and chief executive. “But the point of our ownership has always been that it was supposed to be good for the Post.”He added: “We were certain the paper would survive under our ownership, but we wanted it to do more than that. We wanted it to succeed.”It was the same 80 years earlier, when Meyer, a wealthy native Californian, sent a representative to the steps of The Post’s former headquarters on E Street. His winning bid for the bankrupt newspaper was $825,000, and he was not disclosed as the new owner for 12 days.He drafted the announcement of the sale and stated his intentions: “It will be conducted as an independent paper devoted to the best interests of the people of Washington and vicinity, and hopes to have their interest and support.”By the time Meyer was 40, in 1915, his fortune was said to be in the $50 million to $60 million range. When he bought The Post, he was 57 and most recently had been chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.He stressed the “independent” part to dispel rumors that the paper would become a mouthpiece for the Republican Party. He said seven principles would guide The Post, the last of which was: “The newspaper shall not be the ally of any special interest, but shall be fair and free and wholesome in its outlook on public affairs and public men.”Meyer poured his fortune into The Post and was an enthusiastic cheerleader. He was said to have tried to sell a subscription to the driver before he exited a cab.But the real change for The Post came 21 years after the purchase, when Meyer and his son-in-law Philip Graham bought out its morning rival, the Washington Times-Herald. “For the Post, it meant a doubling of circulation, a morning monopoly and within five years the overtaking of the traditional advertising leader in Washington, The Star,” wrote Post reporter Chalmers Roberts in a history of the paper.Graham was brilliant and charismatic, a former Supreme Court clerk with big ambitions and serious problems. He became publisher at 31, and Meyer arranged for him to hold more stock in the company than his own daughter Katharine because, he explained to her, “no man should be in the position of working for his wife.” Mrs. Graham did not object.“I increasingly saw my role as the tail to his kite and the more I felt overshadowed, the more it became a reality,” Katharine Graham wrote in her Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography, “Personal History.”Philip Graham struggled with mental illness and committed suicide in 1963; his 47-year-old widow was faced with the decision of whether to sell the paper or run it herself.It was the beginning of a long career for Katharine Graham that coincided with — and came to symbolize — two powerful trends. The first was the role of women as leaders in American life. The second was the rise of Washington’s permanent elite, an orbit of the unelected that grew along with the federal city and exercised soft power on those who had hard power.Graham became both the leading woman in American business and a center of connection and influence in Washington society. When Graham later penned her bestselling memoir, writer Nora Ephron wrote in a review: “The story of her journey from daughter to wife to widow to woman parallels to a surprising degree the history of women in this century.”Graham’s legacy at The Post was defined by her choice of editor, Benjamin C. Bradlee, and by a series of journalistic crises. In 1971, a judge had ordered the New York Times to stop publishing reports about the Pentagon Papers, a secret official history of the Vietnam War. The Post obtained its own copy. “Frightened and tense, I took a big gulp and said, ‘Go ahead, go ahead, go ahead. Let’s go. Let’s publish,’ ” Graham recalled saying.She was best known for her support of Bradlee and two reporters, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, during their reporting on the Watergate break-in. That story, which had been scoffed at by big-name reporters at The Post and elsewhere, led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon and became the most famous in the history of American journalism.“It was a small group of people on the Metro staff against the world. Except we had the backing of Ben Bradlee and Katharine Graham,” said Leonard Downie Jr., who was an editor on the metropolitan staff during Watergate and served as executive editor from 1991 to 2008.Katharine Graham later faced down a strike from the paper’s pressmen’s union in 1975, a tense period in which presses were vandalized and daily copy was ferried out by helicopter to other printing facilities.In 1979, 33-year-old Donald Graham became the next generation to run The Post. “Today, as in the rest of my life, my mother has given me everything but an easy act to follow,” he said.Donald Graham joked often about how he got his job, but he worked hard to expand what had been a life of privilege. He served in Vietnam and learned all aspects of The Post: He worked as a reporter and editor, advertising salesman, production supervisor, and in many other roles on the business and editorial staffs of The Post.But before that, he became a police officer because, as his mother said, he wanted “to become acquainted with the city, its people, and its problems.”center_img As regal as Katharine Graham could be, Donald Graham was a down-to-Earth publisher with better sources in the city and the region than most of his paper’s reporters. He prided himself on knowing the names of everyone who worked in the building.“I hated getting into an elevator with Don, because I have a terrible memory for names,” Downie said. “He knew all the people from the ninth floor to the sub-basement.”It is impossible to overstate how close the paper’s employees felt to the owners. When reporters picked up the check for lunch or dinner with sources, the standard line was: “The Grahams are paying.”The fifth member of the family to run the paper is Katharine Weymouth, Donald Graham’s niece and a lawyer with degrees from Harvard and Stanford. Weymouth was announced as publisher on Feb. 7, 2008.“Our rate of success with publishers named Katharine has been outstanding,” Donald Graham said in making the announcement.Weymouth grew up in New York City, the daughter of Katharine Graham’s daughter Lally Weymouth. The stories she recalls hearing about the Graham family involved its influence in Washington: Phil Graham helping put Lyndon B. Johnson on the Democratic ticket in 1960; Ronald Reagan turning up at her grandmother’s birthday parties.Weymouth inherited a very different business than what Donald and Katharine Graham had been given. Morning newspapers everywhere had long functioned as near-monopolies, making enough money to insulate owners and journalists from the grim details of profit and loss.But the Internet had derailed that model, in Washington and everywhere else.“The increase in digital income is not nearly as great as the loss in advertising income. And that’s the problem,” Downie said. He recalled hearing worries about the trend long before Weymouth took the publisher’s job. “She did not preside over this change. The change began well before her.”At the same annual meeting where Weymouth’s promotion was announced, the company also revealed a new round of buyouts for newsroom employees. And it said it would close one of its two printing plants.During Weymouth’s tenure as publisher, the problems at The Post — and other papers — have worsened. Post circulation fell from 638,000 on weekdays to about 450,000 for the first six months of 2013. The newspaper’s revenue dropped as well. The company’s newspaper division took in $801 million in Weymouth’s first year as publisher and $582 million in 2012 — a decline of more than 25 percent.Weymouth’s early tenure was also marred by a scandal over proposed “salons,” where The Post would connect high-paying business interests to government officials. In 2012, she replaced the first editor she had hired to run the newsroom, Marcus Brauchli, with Boston Globe editor Martin Baron.Weymouth said she and Donald Graham together decided that The Post needed a new owner who was more like her great-grandfather: wealthy enough to buy the paper and make it again a private company.“What I said to Don [was] if the journalism is the mission — and it is — then you can make an argument that The Post [Company] is no longer the best place to house The Post,” Weymouth said Monday.Did she consider whether Katharine Graham, her grandmother, would have approved?“It didn’t play a role. Also found was a dagger from the 16th century, a chimney from 1908, and a collection of bottles, wagons and buckets used to mix cement during the canal’s first wave of construction.The canal, an engineering masterwork that transformed global commerce, opened on August 15, 1914, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and saving ships the long, dangerous trip around South America.For the past seven years, Panama has been working to add a third set of locks to the canal, to nearly triple its capacity.The expansion was initially scheduled to finish this year, in time for the anniversary, but has now been pushed back to January 2016. This month, she touched down in Shanghai to pitch multimillion-dollar condominiums to a crowd of 5,000 or more at the U.S. Real Estate Showcase and Forum.As her journey suggests, developers are giving South Florida something more to brag about than beaches. It’s all part of a boom that just a few years ago seemed most unlikely: Miami was reeling from one of the deepest real-estate-driven recessions in decades. And the butter-soft demand was nowhere more in evidence than in the luxury condo market.Today, bolstered by foreign buyers, the market has roared back and Miami real estate is undergoing an explosion of stylish and sophisticated luxury and ultra-luxury projects, including at least eight designed by world-renowned Pritzker Prize-winning architects. The lists of amenities include rooftop soccer pitches and balcony plunge pools and individual car elevators for whisking prized automobiles – and their owners – in privacy to their condominiums high in the sky.All this exuberance raises the question: Is this a new bubble on the rise?Housing prices have leveled off since a post-recession peak in 2013. A similar price slowdown in 2005 swayed like a wrecking ball that would soon land its blow to the housing market.The glut of foreign buyers, who often pay in cash, could help, however. The constantly rotating field of foreign buyers serves to keep the market hot, according to brokers and developers who, when one foreign economy falters, quickly target buyers in another where things are picking up.These exceedingly rich buyers are often savvy investors who want to buy U.S. real estate as a currency hedge, effectively converting a portion of their wealth to dollars to protect it from devaluation.That, Fucci said, is what she saw happening on her visit to China. Faced with a series of devaluations of China’s currency, wealthy investors see luxury condos here as a way to convert their money into strong dollars.“It reminds me so much of when I used to go to South America five years ago,” Fucci said. “People come up to you and say, ‘How do I get my money out? I’ll buy. Just tell me how to get my money out.’ ”In Shanghai, Fucci leaned on her experience about which units sell best.“I save inventory with the correct numbers,” she said – meaning those that might be considered auspicious according to Chinese numerology. “Lucky seven” holds true in the East and West, but other numbers are seen as good, or bad, in China. “So anything that ends in eight, five – you know, all the numbers that are important to them – we save for that trip.”In October, Fucci is going to Turkey. Fucci, chief executive of OneWorld Properties, is among those leading the charge. South America is still the meat, but China is the quinoa du jour – a chic and increasingly important side portion in the mix of markets with high-end buyers pouring money into Miami. So is Turkey. And, yet again, the United States.“It’s musical chairs,” said Ugo Columbo, developer of the 549-unit Brickell Flatiron on the chic and rapidly growing edge of Miami’s financial district, where penthouses run from $2.5 million to $14 million. “There’s always one country that’s looking to take its money out and invest it in Miami. Whether it’s because their economy is doing good or because the politics are bad, or another mix of reasons, but I’ve always seen the influx to be pretty constant.”It’s not just factors abroad that matter. The city’s cosmopolitan features have multiplied as well. Restaurants, retail options and concert, theater and art venues are transforming the character – and appeal – of Miami’s downtown.Ron Shuffield, president of EWM Realty International, describes a city that has gone from being a cultural backwater by the beach to a recognized center of Latin American and contemporary art. “When Art Basel came here, it was just like the final stamp of approval that this is where it’s happening,” he said. Art Basel stages influential contemporary art shows annually in Basel, Switzerland; Hong Kong; and, since 2002, Miami.As projects have gone up, so have prices. The two-story, 8,253-square-foot penthouse (that size doesn’t include the 10,000-square-foot-terrace) at the Norman Foster-designed Faena House listed at $50 million – and reportedly sold for $10 million more.But Miami is still considered a bargain on the world market.Shahab Karmely of KAR Properties in New York says it’s a place where developers can build and sell “a world-class condo for less than in São Paulo or Rio, or a third of what you would have to spend in New York and a fifth of London, Paris, Moscow, Shanghai or Tokyo.”Individual projects are going to extraordinary lengths to be ever more alluring.The Paramount Miami Worldcenter hired a consultant to make sure the building’s design was in harmony with the principles of feng shui, and to advise the brokers on how to use that as a sales tool. It has before.Sales to South American and European investors slowed as Latin American currencies and the euro declined. That spurred interest among the Chinese, whose currency remained strong.Now, the tremors in China’s economy and repeated slide of the renminbi could hamper Miami’s efforts if Chinese buyers back away from spending on lavish second, third or fifth homes thousands of miles from their first.Another complication: China has seemed an off-puttingly distant and difficult market to tap into for South Florida sellers accustomed to looking closer to home for buyers. But that’s changing.“I’ve been one of the holdouts,” said Alicia Cervera, managing partner of Cervera Real Estate and a member of the board of directors of Miami’s Downtown Development Authority. “I’ve been one of those who’s been saying, ‘China is a long way away. There’s lower-hanging fruit,’ and not really jumping on the China bandwagon all that quickly.”No longer, she said. “I do believe we’re at the tipping point and that there’s going to be a very strong presence of Chinese buyers in the Miami market.”Cervera, too, sees parallels between China now and markets past. Turbulence in the Chinese economy may shake investors momentarily, but that can work to South Florida’s advantage.“If the reaction is the same as it was in South America, the short-term effect is paralysis and the long-term effect is that it becomes the new normal,” she said. “And if anything, it makes them say, ‘We can’t have all our eggs in one basket.’ ”Still, there are challenges beyond the economy. The sheer distance between Miami and some of the buyers is daunting, for sellers and buyers. There are no direct flights between Miami and Beijing. Or Istanbul, yet. (The first direct Miami-Istanbul link in 14 years is scheduled to begin Oct. 25.) Taking a team of sales representatives the 8,000-plus miles for the Beijing Luxury Property Show, as Fucci did in April, or to Shanghai is a $100,000 proposition, Fucci said.Those kinds of numbers don’t make sense to everyone.“That’s too expensive, to start looking for buyers and creating new markets,” said Gil Dezer, the developer of the Porsche Design Tower, where units run from $6.3 million to $33.5 million. “Our feeling is, when you’re in Miami, come take a look at us.”That may be especially true now that American buyers, buoyed by a rebounding economy, are elbowing their way back onto the market. Many are coming from the Northeast, others from California.Developer David Martin, who relied on the talents of Pritzker winners Rem Koolhaas and Renzo Piano for his Park Grove and Eighty Seven Park projects, respectively, said his customers include locals and international buyers, as well as “a domestic market that’s kind of discovering Miami again.”And then there are those musical chairs. Russians who rushed in with their petrodollars have virtually disappeared as the ruble has tumbled. But Colombians and Argentines are coming back. So, too, Brazilians.“I would say that in Miami, disappearing acts are short stints,” Cervera said.Mexicans, benefitting from a newly improved economy at home, bought five of the seven 10,000-square-foot duplex residences at the Porsche Design Tower. Only one duplex remains. (Asking price: $17 million.) The Worldcenter project has drawn buyers from more than 30 countries – not just the typical ones, such as Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina and Colombia, but also China, Egypt and Turkey, with 11 buyers.All bring nuances of style and taste and a cultural background that need to be considered by the sellers. The Chinese, Columbo said, tend to travel, and buy, in groups: “They’ll buy a block of 10 apartments.”Each country, too, has regulatory requirements affecting transfers of cash and foreign investments.Brazilian banking regulations, for example, turned Dezer’s typical sales procedure on its head.“They need to have a signed contact to show their bank in order for them to wire the money from their bank to the United States,” he said. “So, normally, our procedure was we don’t sign the contract until there’s a deposit, and the Brazilians said, ‘Well, we can’t give a deposit without a signed contract.’ So we gave the Brazilians a one-week grace period with a signed contract to give them time to get their initial deposit.”Ultimately, the developers and brokers realize they need to be flexible and nimble to capture the wealthy consumers. Costa Rica surf squad wins Central American Games for 10th straight year

first_imgMake it a perfect 10 for the Costa Rica surf team.In what’s become a virtual formality, Costa Rica won its 10th consecutive Central American surf championship on Sunday at the tournament on the beaches of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The dominating team performance – in which six Tico riders earned first place honors out of nine total categories – was highlighted by Jacó’s Jason Torres and Pavones’ Leilani McGonagle, who won the men’s and women’s titles respectively.The four other Costa Rican surfers who won their categories were Paola Duarte (girl’s under-18), Óscar Urbina (boy’s under-16), Rolando Herrera (men’s stand-up paddling), and Edith García (women’s stand-up paddling). Costa Rica’s Leilani McGongale was crowned the Central America women’s surf champion on Dec. 6, 2015 at San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Costa Rican riders won six out of nine total categories. We typically made them in school during preparations for the civic festival to mark Costa Rica’s Independence Day on Sept. 15.Today, faroles come in all shapes and sizes. Giant crests with the Costa Rican flag are highlighted by bright reflectors; there are elaborate “casitas típicas” (typical homes) and large oxcarts that are so heavy the lantern’s pole can barely support them.In today’s traditional parades, you can even find large footballs converted into lanterns, faroles with disco lights, and the dreadful Pitufina, or Smurfette, along with any of the cartoon character Smurfs, for that matter.The truth is that in Costa Rica, any excuse is a good one for mounting a “molote,” or large crowd, and as is the tradition, on the evening of Sept. 14 kids pour into the streets with their parents to light up the night with their lanterns.But why do we do this?The best-known version of where lantern parades originated centers on a Guatemalan woman named María Dolores Bedoya. As the story goes, in the middle of the Central American independent movement, Bedoya ventured out into the night on Sept. 14, 1821 in what is now Antigua, Guatemala. With a lantern in hand, she called the residents of the town to meet in the plaza to rally for independence.At the time, the legislators of the provinces of Guatemala were meeting in Antigua, which was the most important city in Guatemala.The townsfolk gathered in the plaza with lanterns all night and into the early morning, waiting for a decision from legislators. Finally, on Sept. 15, the act of independence was signed, declaring Central America’s liberation from Spain. That’s when the chapines (Guatemalans) began shouting, “¡Viva la patria! ¡Viva la libertad!” (“Long live the homeland! Long live liberty!”)Costa Rica belonged to the council of León, Nicaragua, and no one here really knew what was happening at the time. It wasn’t until Oct. 29 when a letter reached Cartago, east of the current capital of San José, notifying Costa Ricans of the news of independence.Since then, lanterns have become a traditional decoration to mark the events. After Costa Rica’s war of 1948, political leaders decided to revive the country’s “patriotic values,” and to promote the lantern parades, they asked teachers to motivate their communities to encourage lantern making and prizes for the prettiest lanterns.In 1953, Manuel Ureña was named director of San José schools, and he declared Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. the official time and date for lantern parades across the country.Since then, lantern making has become a tradition. As I remember them, lanterns were made with scissors, glue, cardboard and tissue paper at the kitchen table, and always at the last minute. Vaio SX14 vs MacBook Pro Which Portable Powerhouse Is Best

However, a few major missteps — awful battery life and a tiny touchpad — are the SX14’s undoing in this face-off. In Apple’s credit, the latest MacBook Pro offers blistering performance and solid battery life in a sleek, if bland, chassis. If you can afford it, go with the exorbitantly priced MacBook Pro. Not in this case. The SX14 is a deceivingly light laptop, weighing in at a mere 2.3 pounds.  Sitting at the ground of this laptop teeter-totter, the MacBook Pro weighs 3 pounds, which makes it fairly portable but heavier than many of its 13-inch competitors. With a lid made of lightweight carbon and a deck finished with brushed aluminum, the SX14’s chassis is a smart balance of brawn and beauty. Our all-black model looks especially stealthy, thanks to its various shades of glossy and matte black.  The SX14’s lightness will grab your attention when you’re carrying it; On a desk, you’ll be intrigued by the laptop’s elevated deck, which is raised off the ground by two nubs on the laptop’s back edge. The downward angle of the deck makes for a better typing experience and maximizes airflow when the SX14’s fans rev up. MORE: Sony Laptops – Brand Review & Rating – Laptop MagAll the craziness going on with the SX14’s design makes the MacBook Pro look bland. Apple hasn’t made any major aesthetic changes to the MacBook Pro in years. We’d be more upset if the MacBook Pro still wasn’t one of the sleekest machines around. The utilitarian aluminum chassis with its iconic Apple logo is unquestionably elegant. Regardless, it’s time for a change. Because of the thin bezels surrounding its display, the 14-inch SX14 (12.6 x 8.8 x 0.7 inches) isn’t much larger than the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro (12 x 8.4 x 0.6 inches). Winner:SX14Buy the Vaio SX14PortsThe MacBook Pro keeps things simple. You get four Thunderbolt 3 ports, two on each side, for superfast transfer speeds and connecting to multiple high-res monitors. The SX14 took the opposite approach, including practically every laptop port from the last decade. On the right side of the SX14 is a VGA input (yes, it still exists), an Ethernet port, an HDMI, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a USB 3.1 Type-A port and an SD card slot. But wait, there’s more. On the left side are two USB 3.0 ports, a lock slot and a headphone/mic jack. We would have liked a Thunderbolt 3 port, but the SX14’s variety of ports is still more versatile than the MacBook Pro’s limited selection.Winner: SX14DisplayYour favorite shows will look great on either of these laptops, but the 4K panel on the Vaio SX14 is the sharper of the two. Other than the extra pixels on the Vaio, the displays on the SX14 and MacBook Pro have practically the same qualities. According to our colorimeter, the SX14’s 14-inch, 4K panel reproduces 113% of the sRGB color gamut, making it slightly less vivid than the MacBook Pro’s 13.3-inch, 2560 x 1600-pixel panel (118%). Both of those results are short of the premium laptop average (130%). MORE: Laptops with the Most Colorful ScreensThe SX14 reversed its fortunes on our brightness test, peaking at 428 nits, whereas the MacBook Pro’s screen is a tad dimmer, at 408 nits. This time, both laptops beat the category average of 345 nits. Winner: SX14Keyboard and TouchpadThe Vaio SX14 has one of the best keyboards and worst touchpads, while the MacBook has one of the worst keyboards and best touchpads. The problem isn’t that the MacBook Pro’s keyboard is uncomfortable. Yes, the keys travel a measly 0.6 millimeters, but they have a nice clickiness to them and their 60 grams of actuation force means your fingers will feel a nice bump but aren’t ever slowed down. We’re more worried about durability. Apple promises the mysterious new material used in this latest model will prevent double typing or keys failing to register, but we’re still weary of Apple’s claims, especially after the well-documented issues found in Apple’s Butterfly switch. I have no qualms with the SX14’s keyboard, which has decent travel, at 1.2mm (though still below our 1.5mm preference) and clicky keys with 61 grams of actuation force. Also, the downward-angled deck put my wrists in a more natural position for a more comfortable typing experience. The SX14’s 3.1 x 1.7-inch touchpad is a headache to use. Cramped and with stiff clickers, the touchpad made Windows 10 gestures more difficult than they should be. Conversely, Apple’s MacBook touchpads have long been considered the best in the business and the 5.3 x 3.2-inch surface on the latest MacBook Pro is no different. Winner: DrawPerformanceOur MacBook Pro review unit outperformed the SX14 even though it was configured with lesser components. On the Geekbench 4.1 overall performance test, the MacBook Pro with a Core i5 CPU and 16GB of RAM scored an 18,221, much higher than the SX14’s (Core i7-8565U, 16GB of RAM) 14,806 result and the category average (14,910). The MacBook Pro even topped the SX14 on our video transcoding test, transferring a 4K video into 1080p resolution in 14 minutes and 20 seconds. The Vaio completed the same task in 16 minutes and 46 seconds, which is slower than the MacBook Pro but much faster than the average premium laptop (22:27).  The storage drives in Apple’s new laptops are ridiculously fast. Our MacBook Pro’s 256GB SSD transferred 4.97GB of multimedia files in 2 seconds at a rate of 2,573 megabytes per second. The SX14’s 1TB SSD is fast in its own right, with transfer speeds of 727 MBps (the category average is 558.5 MBps), but don’t expect anyone to top Apple anytime soon.   MORE: Best Apple LaptopsNeither laptop is meant for gaming and that showed on our real-world graphics performance test in which the SX14 played Dirt 3 at 38 frames per seconds while the MacBook Pro ran the racing game at 33 fps. Both are above our 30-fps playability threshold but well below the 67-fps category average. Winner: MacBook ProBuy the MacBook ProBattery LifeThe SX14 has remained competitive thus far, but here is where that ends in brutal fashion. The Vaio SX14 lasted for 4 hours and 27 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits. With a runtime of 8 hours and 41 minutes, the MacBook Pro lasts nearly twice as long on a charge. Ouch.Winner: MacBook ProValue and PriceGood luck finding a more expensive 13-inch laptop than the MacBook Pro. The new base model with two Thunderbolt 3 ports starts at $1,299 and includes a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. For $1,499, you can double the storage to 256GB and keep the same specs. The higher-end version (with four Thunderbolt 3 ports) that we pitted against the SX14 starts at a steep $1,799 with a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Opting for 16GB of RAM brings us to our $1,999 review unit. For $100 less, you can get the SX14 with a 4K display, a Core i7-8565U CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. From its featherweight chassis to the borderline- absurd buffet of ports, the Vaio SX14 has plenty of highlights. But as a business laptop that costs upward of $2,100, the Vaio faces a tough task: persuading people and companies to spend that sort of money on something other than an Apple laptop.
